A freshwater biologist is someone in the field of freshwater biology, which involves research in freshwater environments. Freshwater biologist often studies freshwater fish. Freshwater fish make up a significant part of freshwater ecosystems and include many important food fish, sportfish, and other non-food species like the famous Amazon River Dolphin. There are six strengths of freshwater biologists: ecological and environmental sciences, life science and mathematics, natural resource management; physical sciences; social sciences; education/interpretation/entertainment; and information technology. Freshwater biologists can focus on community ecology, population ecology, or ecosystem function. They must monitor biodiversity and determine factors that affect the biotic communities in freshwater habitats, such as pollution levels from industrialization, climate change, and competition from invasive species. freshwater biologists also monitor changes in the benthic zones of lakes and rivers floor where most freshwater forms live.

With the growing global population, freshwater habitats are at risk of pollution and destruction for freshwater organisms to survive.
