1. Marine Engineering Technology (MET)

MET is a two-year course that teaches students the basic principles and essential skills necessary to work in the Marine Engineering profession. You’ll learn about the propulsion, cargo handling and transportation, hull design and construction, and many other topics. This MET course is offered at both South African Maritime Safety Training in Cape Town and Northwest College in South Africa. The cost of this degree is approximately $14,000 USD.

2. Marine Technical Officer Course (MTO)

This program focuses solely on preparing students for their MCA license tests. It’s 6 months long but the lessons are intensive with classes usually lasting up to 5 days per week depending on your schedule. Upon graduation, you will need to pass all seven MCA exams in order to acquire your license. There’s an option for you to take a four-day assessment however which will allow you to skip three of the seven tests and just focus on the final few.

The cost of this marine engineering course is $3,800 USD and it’s offered at Marine Education Training Center (METC) in India. They also offer a Technicians Entry Scheme if you’re already employed by a shipping company and looking to advance your career.

3. Offshore and Marine Engineering Technology (OMET)

This program is slightly different from most because it offers two specializations: offshore or maritime. Students choose their track during their second year and learn everything they need to know about both fields. OMET is a three-year degree offered at the University of the West of Scotland in Glasgow, UK. The tuition for this program is £9,000 per year (approx. $11,500 USD).

4. Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

This five-year degree from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK is one of the most prestigious marine engineering courses available. It’s designed to train students in all aspects of naval architecture and marine engineering with a focus on research and innovation. Graduates of this program are highly sought after by employers all over the world. Tuition for this program costs £17,500 per year (approx. $23, USD).

5. Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and Nautical Science

If you’ve always dreamed of being a professional sailor, the best way to make it happen is by enrolling in this program at SUNY Maritime College. You’ll learn everything you need to know about marine engineering and be provided with plenty of opportunities for hands-on training either on campus or at sea. The tuition for this degree is $21,000 per year but financial aid is available if needed. Graduates are usually guaranteed a position within a maritime company upon graduation.

6. MSc in Maritime Business and Management (Marine Operations)

If you’re more interested in the business side of shipping rather than the actual engineering process, then this course from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK is the perfect option for you. This course not only provides students with in-depth knowledge about all aspects of the marine business but also helps them acquire the necessary skills to become successful managers in this industry. Tuition for this program costs £17,500 per year (approx. $23, USD).

7. Offshore and Diving Operations

Offshore diving may not sound like an area where you’d need engineering degrees, but it’s actually much more complicated than you might think. This course teaches students all they need to know about offshore diving operations along with everything involved in underwater welds and construction techniques. The tuition for this program is €20,000 (approx $22,700 USD) and it’s offered at the Irish College of Oceaneering in Galway, Ireland.

8. Marine Engineering Technician

This program is designed for students who are already working in the marine industry and want to further their careers by obtaining a diploma in marine engineering. The courses are offered online which makes it a great option for those who can’t attend classes in person. The tuition for this program is £2,000 (approx. $2,600 USD) and graduates will be able to apply for the IMarEST Marine Engineering Technician certification.

9. Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Boating)

This program is perfect for those who want to learn the basics of maritime operations without committing to full-time classes. It provides students with essential skills that are necessary in order to work in this industry including navigation, ship-handling, safety procedures, and techniques for working within the maritime environment. The tuition for this program is £1,200 (approx. $1,600 USD) and it’s offered at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania.

10. Diploma of Yachting

This course offered by IYT will teach you everything about the nautical aspects of yachting and how they affect skippers and crew members on board boats or yachts. You’ll learn how to handle vessels under sail and power while using ropes and cables which will prepare you for a career on any size vessel. The tuition for this program is €2,000 (approx. $2,260 USD) and it’s offered at the IYT School of Seamanship in Piraeus, Greece.
