Is Coral A Plant Or An Animal?

is coral a plant

Around six thousand species of coral are there in the world. Some species thrive on the dark, cold seafloor of the open ocean, while some are growing in warm shallow waters near coastlines. Coral may look like a plant because they grow from roots in the seafloor, but they actually are an animal. The reason why they are known as colonial organisms is that many individual creatures live and grow while connected to each other. The individual organism is dependent on one another for survival. The coral reef is in the form of a cylinder, including a mouth at one end surrounded by

tentacles. The limb-like tentacles cluster food and sting creatures that threaten the coral. The polyps waste products exit through the mouth after the food is digested. Sometimes coral reefs are known as the rainforests of the sea. The availability of coral reefs is the first priority for many oceanographers and other marine conservationists because the world has lost nearly 20% of its coral reefs, with many more reefs under threat today. The main cause of coral reef; loss is pollution and increasing ocean temperature.

Amazing Coral Reef Facts

Coral

They are living organisms, although they look like a composition of rocks from a cursory view. The polyps or reefs become hard as they die and new reefs grow on top of them makes the reef grow. The coral reef has nutritional requirements as they are considered living due to their inhibition and their composition.
